MALUMFASHI: TEARS IN MY HEART…. The Quandary Security Situation in Malumfashi Katsina State is a Cat-Rat-Race!

By Alh Tukur Atiku

The security situation in Malumfashi, local government area of Katsina state, is indeed dire and heartbreaking. About 300 villages are on the run and nd even the local government headquarters is no more safe now. The whole local government is living a Gaza like life…..

Malumfashi is the oldest LG in Katsina state and the first or second largest in politics, agriculture and population; with multiple occupations in the state. It has about 400 polling units, 12 wards, about 152 wards heads recognized and volunteers, 17 village heads and one District Head. The major occupations are farming, trading nd transportation.

The constant fear, anxiety, and tension experienced by residents, particularly in areas like Rafin Sanyi, Karfi, and Yaba, Na’alma, Dayi, Gora etc are unacceptable. The bandits’ attacks, killings, and theft of human and livestock have disrupted daily life, leaving many without access to their farms, livelihoods, or basic necessities. The residents are now lingering in nearest ‘safe’ villages or local governments; or state that are no longer trustworthy. They have become vagrants, wonderers , homeless destitutes, poor, beggars and alienated. With all these bad situations, there is no single IDP Centre in the whole of Malumfashi LGA…

The devastating impact on the community is evident in the number of orphans, beggars, divorcees, and vulnerable individuals that abound. The destruction of villages and displacement of people have turned the region into a crisis prone zone.

While the current administration is making efforts to address the situation, it is clear that a more comprehensive and collaborative approach is needed. The federal, state, and local governments must work together to find lasting solutions to this security challenges.

Recommendations on How to stop this insecurity are:

1. Enhanced security presence……
Increase the number of security personnel and equipment in affected areas to provide a visible presence and deter bandits.
2. Intelligence gathering…
Improve intelligence gathering and sharing among security agencies to anticipate and prevent attacks.
3. Community engagement… Engage with local communities to understand their concerns, gather information, and build trust in government initiatives.
4. Economic support….
Provide support for affected communities, such as access to basic necessities, livelihoods, and economic opportunities.
5…Regional cooperation… Collaborate with neighboring states and countries to share intelligence and best practices in addressing banditry.

On the whole, the situation in Malumfashi LGA requires urgent attention and collective action to restore peace, security, and stability to the region.
