Unizik Student Commits Suicide, Allegedly Over Tuition Hike
A male 200-level student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, is said to have committed himself as a result of an alleged increase in school fees.
The deceased, a resident of Abia State’s Isuikwuato Local Government Area, was claimed to be pursuing a degree in Industrial Physics.
His body was apparently discovered dangling within one of the campus’s housing blocks.
A source who preferred anonymity said, “The deceased locked himself inside the room for days and was sobbing for inability to pay a new regime of school fees introduced by management.
The source added, “When the door was broken, he was seen dangling with a rope round his neck.”
Another source which described the deceased as a quiet and calm student,
said he never showed any sign of depression before the incident.

Ken Chukwura, the Institution’s Chief Security Officer, said the deceased’s housemates had been summoned for interrogation while the inquiry was underway.
He urged the students to go about their business fearlessly now that the situation had been stabilized.
Before the corpse was taken to the mortuary, a joint team of school security, the Nigeria Police Force, and the institution’s top principal officers were there.
Ikenga Tochukwu, a police public relations officer, described the situation as regrettable and said that investigations had begun.
The institution’s students recently staged a five-day strike in protest of a tuition increase. Following a meeting with the university’s Students Union Government, the management slashed the fees.
