Tambuwal Mourns Former Chief Justice Mohammed Uwais

Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Honourable Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, GCON, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most revered legal minds and a pillar of constitutional integrity.

In a statement shared via his official handle on X, the Tambuwal noted that Justice Uwais was not only a distinguished jurist but also an elder statesman whose contributions to the development of Nigeria’s legal system would remain indelible.

“It is with a heavy heart, yet with deep gratitude to Almighty Allah (SWT), that I received the news of the passing of Honourable Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, GCON,” Tambuwal wrote. “Justice Uwais was more than a judge. He was a moral compass, a guardian of constitutionalism, and a firm believer in the rule of law.”

Reflecting on his personal connection with the late jurist, Senator Tambuwal recounted a pivotal moment in his early career: “Over 33 years ago, as a young man preparing for Call to the Bar while at the Nigerian Law School, Justice Uwais endorsed my Benchers’ sponsorship form, alongside Honourable Justice Mamman Nasir (PCA) of blessed memory, as my sponsors. That singular act of generosity and belief helped lay the foundation for my journey in the legal profession and in public service. I remain eternally grateful.”

Tambuwal praised Justice Uwais’ legacy of discipline, national service, and mentorship, emphasising that his contributions to legal practice and nation-building would continue to resonate across generations.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the late jurist’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Nigerian judiciary, and all who benefitted from his wisdom and leadership.

“Justice Mohammed Uwais will be remembered always, not just for what he stood for, but for the lives he touched,” Tambuwal concluded.
