Six Die In AFCON 2021 Stampede At Stadium Before Cameroon, Comoros Match

A crush outside a stadium holding an Africa Cup of Nations match in Cameroon is said to have killed six people and injured scores more.

Football fans struggled to gain entry to the Paul Biya stadium in a Yaounde neighborhood, according to video footage.

According to AP News, Naseri Paul Biya, governor of Cameroon’s central region, indicated there could be more casualties.

According to another account, a number of children had passed out.

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 people, but due to COVID-19 limits, it was only supposed to be roughly 80% full.

Approximately 50,000 people attempted to attend the match, according to officials.

Some of the injured were in “desperate” condition, according to nurse Olinga Prudence.

In a statement, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said it is “currently investigating the incident and trying to obtain further details about what transpired.”

Despite the incident, Cameroon and Comoros played their round of 16 encounter, which concluded in a 2-1 victory for the hosts.
