Landlord’s Greediness Caused Ondo Building Collapse – Tenant
One of the tenants of the building that fell on Tuesday in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has accused the building’s landlord of being the cause of the accident.
Pastor Benson Olom, who lost his octogenarian mother in the collapse, said that the landlord interfered with the building’s structural design.
The DAILY POST had previously reported that one person had died in the fallen structure, with an unknown number of people remaining trapped in the rubble.
However, Olom, who was rescued with his wife and five children after hours of operation by locals, said the landlord had been warned against such a conduct.
Olom claimed that the landlord tampered with the building’s beams to convert the bottom floor from a room and parlour structure to a flat.
“I warned him that tampering with the building could affect us as we were staying in the two-bedroom flat upstairs.

“But all my entreaties and that of others fell on deaf ears.”
He stated one of his children who was rescued last received head injuries and was transported to the hospital, despite his wife and four children still being traumatized by the incident.
Olom pleaded with the government and well-intentioned Nigerians to help him and his family.
Meanwhile, following hours of agitation by her relatives, police officers from Fanibi division deposited the 80-year-old grandmother’s body at the morgue.
Residents in the neighborhood have now accused government agencies of failing to respond to the rescue and provide assistance to the casualties during the operation.
