Katsina Emir Suspends Eid-el-Kabir Durbar

Durbar will not take place on Saturday during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, according to the Katsina Emirate Council.

The Council’s Assistant Secretary, Alhaji Sule Mamman-Dee, made the announcement in a statement released on Tuesday in Katsina.

He claimed that the state’s current security crisis was to blame for the suspension.

Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir-Usman, the emir, reportedly voiced extreme anxiety about the security situation in some areas of the emirate and stated he would only attend the Eid prayers on Saturday, according to Mamman-Dee.

He clarified that the Emir had urged Muslims to keep praying for the restoration of peace in the region and throughout the nation.

The Durbar festival dates back hundreds of years and involves the display of horse riding skills by districts and nobility households, who pay homage to the Emir on Eid day, known in Katsina as ‘Hawan Daushe’.

The emir on his part leads a contingent of members of the Emirate Council, district and village heads in a procession of horses, known as ‘Hawan Bariki’, to pay homage to the state governor, a day after the Eid.
