Euro2020 Final: Gianluigi Donnarumma Why He Didn’t Celebrate After Saving Saka’s Penalty

After saving Bukayo Saka’s penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout win against England on Sunday night, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma explained why he did not celebrate.

While his teammates went ecstatic at Wembley Stadium, Donnarumma quietly walked away after saving Saka’s important penalty.

After both Italy and England missed two penalty penalties, it was up to Saka to score the game-winning penalty, but his effort was tipped away by Donnarumma, ensuring the European Championships would be held in Rome rather than at home.

Instead of celebrating loudly after Italy’s victory, Donnarumma began walking away silently and calmly until being swarmed by his teammates.

Many fans assumed his reaction was indicative of his icy, casual demeanor, but the 22-year-old goalkeeper now claims he just didn’t realize the shootout was over.

Donnarumma believed Italy needed to score one more penalty to win the European Championship, which they did in their semi-final shootout victory over Spain, when Chelsea’s Jorginho netted the game-winning spot-kick.

When asked about his non-celebration, Donnarumma told Sky Sport Italia: “I didn’t celebrate because I didn’t realise we had won!”
