BREAKING: Court Orders Resident Doctors To Suspend Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has been ordered by the National Industrial Court in Abuja to end the strike they have been on since August 2.

The order came after the Federal Government filed a lawsuit in court challenging the strike’s legality.

The Federal Government, along with the Federal Ministry of Health, had ordered that resident doctors go on strike without giving adequate notice as required by law.

It claimed that because NARD members are “critical service providers,” they are banned by law from striking.

“The continued and sustained industrial action by the Defendant/Respondent is contrary to public policy and equally endangers the lives of the citizenry,” it added.

FG had threatened to apply the no-work-no-pay policy to the Resident Doctors after they refused to return to their duty postings due to alleged improper salary payments, but the court, in a judgement on August 23, ordered the parties to “suspend all forms of hostilities” pending the outcome of the litigation.

After hearing all of the parties in the case, Justice Bashir Alkali ordered NARD to cease the strike action during the resumed sessions on Friday.
