The Senator representing Sokoto South, His Excellency Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has urged Nigerians to reflect on the progress made over the past 26 years of democratic governance and recommit themselves to building a more inclusive, accountable, and people-centred democracy.
In a message posted on his official X handle, Senator Tambuwal described Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 as a testament to the resilience, courage, and collective will of the Nigerian people. He acknowledged that while the path has not been without its challenges, the nation’s democracy has endured because citizens continue to believe in the promise of freedom, justice, and progress.
“Democracy is not an event but a culture,” he stated. “It lives in the daily choices we make to uphold truth, protect rights, demand accountability, and participate actively in nation-building.”
Marking the 26th anniversary, the Senator emphasised the need for reflection, renewal, and reform. He called on Nigerians to strengthen the democratic process by ensuring that leadership truly serves the people, institutions are robust, and that the dividends of democracy—such as improved education, jobs, security, and justice—are accessible to all.
“This anniversary should not only remind us of how far we have come,” he noted, “but also challenge us to build a democracy that delivers—not merely on paper, but in practical and transformative ways.”
Senator Tambuwal concluded by stressing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that its gains are preserved and enhanced for future generations.
