Why I Supported Terrorists In The Past – Buhari’s Minister, Pantami Speaks

Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has apologized for his previous inflammatory remarks about militant groups such as the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

The minister said that he was young when he made the controversial remarks, but that he is now more mature and understands better.

On Saturday, he spoke while answering questions at Annor Mosque in Abuja during his regular Ramadan lecture.

“I’ve been traveling across the world for 15 years, teaching people about the risks of terrorism. To preach against terrorism, I traveled to Katsina, Gombe, Borno, Kano, and Difa in Niger Republic.

“In various locations, I have engaged those with Boko Haram ideologies. In Hausa, English, and Arabic, I’ve been writing pamphlets. I’ve been able to reintroduce a number of young people who had strayed from the right direction.

“Some of the statements I made a few years ago that are now causing controversy were based on my view of religious issues at the time, and I have since revised those views based on new facts and maturity.

“Some of the comments were made when I was young; I was in university, and some of the comments were made when I was a teenager. Many scholars and individuals did not understand certain international events when I began preaching at the age of 13, and as a result took positions based on their interpretation, some of whom later changed their positions,” Pantami told the Daily Trust.
