VIDEO: Students Stranded As Flood Wash Away FUTO Bridge
A bridge at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has been washed off following heavy rainfall.
According to a video circulating on social media, several road users and students have been left stranded.
News Direct can recall that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Eze, had raised the alarm that the structure may soon collapse in May 2018.
Mr Eze had said some unidentified persons, in the night, had been illegally excavating sand, thereby undermining the bridge. Eze cautioned that the repair of the bridge would gulp a large sum of money if it was allowed to collapse.
“If the bridge collapses, the money from the excavated sand and fish pond by the host communities, which also goes into their purse cannot build it.
“It will take a whooping sum of money for it to be reconstructed. With its failure also, FUTO will be divided into two campuses because there will be no way to link up with the other side of the campus from the administrative block and vice versa.
