Nigerian University Lecturers’ Union, ASUU, Extends Six Months’ Old Strike
The sixth month of the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) ongoing strike has been extended.
On Monday morning, following a meeting of its National Executive Council at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja, the strike was prolonged.
The strike will either be called off based on the Nigerian government’s offer, or an indefinite strike would be declared, according to prior confirmation from ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke that the union’s NEC will convene on Monday.
Prior to Monday’s NEC meeting, it was learned that the majority of state chapters of ASUU had opted to keep the strike going.
On February 14, 2022, ASUU went on strike because the government had not complied with its demands, which included increased university financing.
But while the government has addressed some of ASUU’s demands, the university lecturers’ union rejected the 35 percent salary increase. Osodeke described the government’s offer as “miserly.”
