New Minimum Wage Amount To Be Announced Today As Committee Finalizes Report

Nigerian workers are set to receive the new minimum wage figure on Friday (today) as the tripartite committee concludes work on the proposal.

Indication emerged that the announcement would be made later today once the committee finalizes its report.

Speaking on the issue, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), stated that the labour union has not received any specific proposal from the federal government regarding the new national minimum wage. Ajaero shared this information on Thursday while addressing journalists at the tripartite committee meeting in Abuja.

He said, “The committee is still in session, and Nigerians will be informed once they conclude their work.”

When asked if a specific figure had been provided, he replied, “Not yet.” Regarding the anticipated figure, Ajaero clarified, “It hasn’t been presented to the committee; it’s being prepared for the committee of the house.”

He expressed hope that the discussions might conclude by Friday. “They are currently deliberating. Once they finish, they will present it to the general assembly for further discussion. We are all hoping everything will be resolved by tomorrow. There is no information on the N105,000 figure before us, either officially or unofficially. We remain at our initial position as it has not been presented to us. Until it is announced publicly, we can’t say the government has a firm stance,” Ajaero added.

Additionally, the Minister of State for Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, informed reporters at the meeting venue, “You will receive updates once we finalize the talks. We will make an announcement when we are finished.”

Also speaking on the minimum wage, Hope Uzodinma, the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), announced that the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage will finalize a new minimum wage figure by Friday (today).
