Tragedy struck on Saturday night at the popular Imo State University (IMSU) Junction following a break failure from a Mack truck that crashed into oncoming vehicles.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent, the driver of the truck lost control of vehicle while coming from Orji flyover heading towards Okigwe road.

The driver was said to have made attempts to avoid the crowded IMSU junction and diverted the truck to the other lane where the vehicle crashed into about four loaded commuter mini busses waiting to take off from the bus stop.

Am eye witness said: “The truck had a break failure while coming from Orji flyover axis and hit a car in the process.

“I guess the driver knowing fully well of the heavy casualty that will happen at IMSU junction that is always crowded with commuter buses and other vehicles saw a stationary truck at the other lane and tried to ram into it to stop his over speeding car.

“Unfortunately, the driver of the other stationary truck saw the approaching truck coming directly from the other lane to his side of the road and he moved away. This made the oncoming truck to crash head-on with about four commercial mini bus loaded with passengers.

“The truck finally stopped by the fence of National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR) Imo State chapter located along Okigwe road.”

The number of casualties could not be ascertained as of the time of the report as lifeless bodies of passengers on board the vehicles could be seen on the road with some in pool of their own blood.

However, men of the Imo State Police Command could be seen at the scene of the incident evacuating the damaged vehicles and assisting the injured to the hospital.
