Lekki Shootings: Lagos plans to counter protesters’ story with two witnesses

The Lagos State Government is seeking to field two expert witnesses to counter claims that it had a hand in the militarys alleged shooting at the Lekki Tollgate Plaza on October, 22, 2020.

The counsel for the state, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN) on Saturday sought permission from the the presiding judge for the witnesses from the lagos judicial panel probing police brutality and the Lekki Toll Gate Shootings.

Owonikoko’s oral application, if granted, would enable both experts to come forth and give evidence on all the Lekki Gate plaza incident petitions together.

At the moment, there are no fewer than 14 petitions before the panel relating to the shooting incident, out of the over 235 petitions received by the panel between October and December 2020.

The counsel for the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Mr Rotimi Seriki, aligned himself with Owonikoko’s prayer.

But the counsel to some of the #EndSARS protest victims, Mr Adeshina Ogunlana, opposed the applications.

In his statement, he noted that the Lagos State Government had not been accused or alleged to have been involved in the Lekki Toll Gate shooting incident. He added that the state and LCC counsel were not representatives or agents of the Nigerian Army.

The Panel Chair, Justice Doris Okuwobi adjourned for ruling on the applications till May 15, 2021.
