JUST IN: FG Issues Fresh Directive As Nationwide Protest Is Set To Kick Off

In light of the proposed national protest scheduled for August 1, the Federal Ministry of Education has issued a circular to all Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, emphasizing the need to protect staff, students, and public infrastructure.

The circular, released through the National Universities Commission (NUC) and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Chris Maiyaki on Monday, acknowledged the right to protest but expressed concerns about potential violence.

Titled “Urgent Arrangements for the Security and Safety of University Staff, Students, and Property During the Proposed Nationwide Protests,” the circular stems from a directive by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

It states, “The Minister of Education has directed that Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities be formally informed about the planned nationwide protests by unknown groups. While the Federal Government recognizes the right to peaceful protest, it is concerned about the safety of university staff, students, and property.

“Therefore, the Honourable Minister has instructed Vice-Chancellors to take proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students.

“Additionally, Vice-Chancellors are to issue specific statements reassuring staff and students of their safety.

“It is also advisable for students to remain on campus and focus on their academic pursuits to avoid potential dangers during the planned protests.

“Please accept the renewed assurances of my highest considerations and best wishes.”
