Govt Beefs Up Security Ahead Of #EndSARS Memorial Protest

Prior to the planned commemoration for victims of the October 20, 2020 Lekki massacre, heavily armed security personnel were spotted at the Lekki Toll Gate.

Security agents holding heavy rifles were seen pacing in front of armoured military tanks parked at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on Tuesday morning, presumably in response to reports that plans for a memorial demonstration were in the works.

Omoyele Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow, dared the Nigeria Police to try to put down the commemoration protests scheduled for October 20 in a tweet released on Tuesday.

“To @PoliceNG in Lagos & across Nigeria, there will be #EndSARS memorial protests and direct actions on October 20, 2021. Nobody can suppress the will of Nigerians to repudiate the mass atrocities of the @mbuhari regime on that day and beyond. #Revolutionnow #EndSARS #BuhariMustGo,” Mr Sowore tweeted.

Nigerian youths staged a statewide demonstration against police brutality, extortion, and extrajudicial killings of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the last quarter of 2020, according to Peoples Gazette (SARS).

The peaceful protests came to an end on October 20, 2020, when troops stationed at the toll gate opened fire on unarmed protestors.

The Nigerian Police Force has tightened up security this year to prevent any planned protests in memory of the victims.

Meanwhile, the government keeps contradicting itself on its role in the slaughter and whether the troops used live bullets.
