Furious Northern Elders Ignore Govt’s Compensation, Make Major Demand After NAF Bombed Many People
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed serious concern over the ‘accidental’ bombing of Tundun Biri in Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army on Sunday, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the incident that resulted in the loss of innocent civilian lives.
In a statement on Tuesday, Director of Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Mallam Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, highlighted the forum’s demand for justice and accountability in the aftermath of the tragic incident. Suleiman acknowledged the prompt response of the Kaduna State government and its commitment to compensating the victims but stressed the importance of a comprehensive investigation beyond compensation.
“However beyond compensation for the victims, a thorough investigation is essential to ensure justice for the affected civilians, prevent future occurrences, and uphold the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law,” said Suleiman.
He emphasized that identifying the causes and circumstances surrounding the incident would enable accountability for any negligence or misconduct, fostering trust between the military and the civilian population.
“This will provide a sense of closure and compensation to the victims, fostering trust between the military and the civilian population,” he added.
Suleiman highlighted the essential nature of a thorough investigation in preventing similar incidents in the future. He stated that analyzing the circumstances leading to the tragedy could reveal systemic failures, training gaps, or inadequate protocols contributing to the accident.
