FG to meet ASUU as another strike looms

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to hold an ’emergency meeting’ with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The meeting is due to the union’s threat to embark on another strike action.

The meeting is set to hold on Tuesday at the ministry of education headquarters in Abuja by 11:00 am. The details of the meeting was made known by Ben Goong, the spokesperson of the ministry of education.

Mr  Goong, quoted the minister of education, Adamu Adamu saying, “the said meeting is intended to nip the strike in the bud”.

ASUU has issued a warning of strike to the Federal Government over its failure to meet with the agreement they had in January that made the union call of it’s nine months strike action.

According to analysis, ASUU had gone on strike for a year for every five years since 1999. Also, Nigerian lecturers have gone on strike 15 times in 50 months.

Successive Nigerian governments have failed to reach agreement and demands of the union. Negotiations have been made by the Nigerian government and ASUU but agreements reached by the two parties are usually not fulfilled.
