Electoral Amendment Bill: Senators Move To Override President Buhari
Senators are expected to overturn President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of the Electoral Amendment Bill, 2021, on Wednesday, according to reports.
The move came after President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill, 2021, which the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, recognized in a letter read in the upper chamber on Tuesday.
Senator Thompson Sekibo, who represents Rivers East Senatorial District and is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Nigerian Navy, said in an interview that lawmakers’ signatures were being gathered in an attempt to override President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
President Buhari’s failure to agree to the amendment bill, according to the legislator, was a big disappointment, but Senators will rise to the occasion regardless of political differences.
Sekibo said the majority of Senators were dissatisfied, revealing that 73 signatures had been collected so far in preparation for Wednesday’s veto override.
Despite the fact that attempts to obtain a list of Senators who have already indicated through signatures were unsuccessful, a Senator from a Northwest State who is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stated that he and “many more others” are committed to overriding President Buhari’s veto tomorrow.
