A military camp in Zazzaga, Munya Local Government Area, Niger State, was attacked by gunmen accused of being bandits.

According to reports, the armed bandits set fire to some cars.

In a two-hour gun fight, the bandits engaged soldiers on the ground.

The bandits allegedly suffered heavy casualties, according to a source, but the Daily Trust is unable to independently verify this assertion.

Although no soldiers were killed in this latest assault, a soldier believed to be the camp’s RSM has been reported missing.

At about 4:00 a.m., the bandits entered the Zagzaga village and divided themselves into three groups.

While one party went straight to the Military Camp at the Junior Secondary School, about 500 meters outside of town, the other set up ambush on the main road leading into town.

According to our source, the third party made their way to the city to keep the vigilantes and youths from retaliating.

The soldiers ran out of ammunition and retreated after about two hours of gunfire between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m., according to the source.

The bandits raided the camp after the soldiers beat a hasty retreat, setting fire to military vehicles and fleeing with another, while also torching the camp’s food store.

It may be recalled that armed men stormed Greenfield University on the Kaduna-Abuja highway around 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday, shot a security guard, and fled with an unknown number of students, according to Naija News.

Greenfield University, a private institution of higher learning in the state, was attacked by gunmen, according to the Kaduna State government.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, stated that a school staff member, Paul Ude Okafor, was killed in the attack, but the number of students kidnapped by the gunmen is still unknown.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Aruwan said that after a distress call was received, troops from Operation Thunder Strike, OPTS, and other security operatives were quickly dispatched to the school.
