Again, Pro-Wike Lawmakers Hold Sitting, Take Another Major Decision Amid Clash With Fubara
The Nyesom Wike-backed Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, convened on Tuesday, July 9, to deliberate on and pass a significant amendment to the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005.
This amendment pertains to the reacquisition of Kalabari Girls High School in Buguma, transferring its control from a church back to the state government.
During the session, lawmakers reviewed a report from the House Committee on Education, expressing unanimous support for the bill. They emphasized the importance of state management for the school to enhance its ability to serve the educational needs of girls in the Asari Toru Local Government Area and its surroundings.
Speaker Amaewhule commended Tekenari Granville, the bill’s sponsor, praising the objectives of the bill as commendable and necessary for community development. He highlighted that the school was mistakenly transferred to a church entity and that reclaiming it would align with the state’s educational objectives.
Following thorough deliberations, the assembly transitioned into a Committee of the Whole for a closer examination of the bill’s clauses before returning to plenary, where the bill was officially passed.
The debate underscored the belief that government oversight would ensure better management and resources for the school.

The Rivers lawmakers loyal to Wike- the FCT Minister, have insisted on holding sitting and taking decisions as the rightful members of the Rivers Assembly contrary to claims of legitimacy by the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led lawmakers who enjoy the backing of Governor Siminalayi Fubara resulting in the state having parallel assemblies as the crisis rages.
