BREAKING: Gunshots As Protesters Clash With Police

Gunshots were heard as protesters clashed with police at the Top Medical junction in the Tunga area of Minna, the Niger State capital.

Nigerians are protesting against the country’s poor economic conditions, demanding better governance.

The confrontation in Minna started when protesters tried to block a busy road, prompting police to fire teargas to disperse them. The protesters regrouped and attempted to set up a roadblock, forcing the police to fire gunshots into the air to scare them away.

Policemen and vigilantes eventually cleared the stones used by the protesters to barricade the road.

Security operatives have taken control of perceived hotspots, including the popular Kpakungu Roundabout on Minna-Bida road, where protests were held earlier this year. The heavy security presence includes personnel from the police, military, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The situation has led to market closures and shuttered shops, as traders fear potential looting.
